CGPRT Crops in the Philippines: a Statistical Profile, 1990-1999 AgEcon
Chowdhury, Mohammad A.T.; Arif, Muhamad.
"CGPRT Crops in the Philippines: A Statistical Profile, 1990-1999" is the eighth in the series of the CGPRT Centre's publications providing specific and wide-ranging agricultural data focusing on coarse grains, pulses, roots and tuber (CGPRT) crops in Asia. An earlier series was published in January 1992 in collaboration with the Philippine Council for Agriculture, Forestry and Natural Resources Research and Development (PCARRD) covering the period 1960-1990. In keeping pace with the previous publication, this updated volume covers eight crops: corn (maize), mungbean, soybean, groundnut, cassava, sweet potato, white potato and rice. Although not a CGPRT crop, rice is the most important crop in the Philippines in terms of area planted and production, hence...

Economic Incentives and Comparative Advantage in Indonesian Food Crop Production AgEcon
Gonzales, Leonardo A.; Kasryno, Faisal; Perez, Nicostrato D.; Rosegrant, Mark W..
Recognizing that the green revolution has resulted in considerable success in production of rice and wheat in many Asian countries, which are now self-sufficient or surpluses in these cereals, IFPRI believes that further growth in agriculture will rely on the productivity of these countries to diversify their agricultural production, while improving productivity in cereals through management and human capital-intensive increase in yield levels. Indonesia is an important example of a country where policy successes in rice production combined with other domestic and world developments in the economic environment of agriculture encouraged policymakers to consider agricultural diversification policies. Key developments leading to an increased interest in...

Enhancing Sustainable Development of Diverse Agriculture in India AgEcon
Singh, R.P.; Singh, N.P.; Kumar, Ranjit.
Agriculture in India occupies an important place as it contributes nearly 25 per cent of GDP and two-thirds of the population depend upon it. Agricultural growth in the past has been sufficient to move from severe food crisis to aggregate food surplus today. The rainfed regions are diverse in terms of resource base, varying from resource rich regions harnessing substantial production to resource poor regions with restricted potential. These resource poor regions are mostly dominated by secondary crops. Barring maize and potato, secondary crops are loosing ground against the finer cereals, cash and commercial crops. Therefore, there is an urgent need to provide a leverage to these crops by providing support in terms of technological advancement and policy...

Multilevel Impact Assessment and Coping Strategies against El Nino: Case of Food Crops in Indonesia AgEcon
Irawan, Bambang.
This study is the second phase of the El Nino study which was undertaken by the CGPRT Centre in five vulnerable countries namely, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Papua New Guinea. The first phase of the El Nino study did not fully reveal the extent of El Nino impacts on production at the farm level, what efforts are undertaken by farmers to reduce possible production decline and what constraints are faced by farmers to implement efficient coping mechanisms. El Nino impacts on household food security, mitigation efforts applied by farmers to overcome their consumption problems and the role of local institutions or the local government in handling the consequences of El Nino were also neglected by the first phase of the study. Accordingly,...

Prospects of Feed Crops in Malaysia AgEcon
Yahya, Tunku Mahmud Bin Tunku; Sukir, Sarmin Bin.
The study was initiated with the objectives of elucidating and analyzing potentials, weaknesses, opportunities, constraints and policy options in the development of feed crop farming with an emphasis on secondary crops in Southeast Asian developing countries. In Malaysia, feed crops currently not much to employment, income generation, import substitution and export promotion because the sub-sector is small. The scope of the study is limited to the dominant non-ruminant sector of the livestock industry. This sector, particularly poultry and swine, has not only experienced rapid growth but also produces more than is required for domestic consumption and thus exports to neighbouring countries.

Relative planting times on the production components in sesame/cowpea bean intercropping in organic system Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Araújo,Afrânio César de; Aloufa,Magdi Ahmed Ibrahim; Silva,Apolino José Nogueira da; Pereira,Walter Esfrain; Oliveira,Cosme Jales de.
Aiming at better land use, small farmers usually plant sesame and cowpea bean intercropped with other crops. The aim of this work was to analyze and quantify the influence of four relative planting times of the cowpea bean in intercropping with sesame from the standpoint of their production components, plant productivity and the index of land equivalent ratio (LER). The field experiment was conducted in a randomized blocks with four treatments and four replicates. The treatments were the sesame and the cowpea bean in intercropping with the cowpea bean planted at the same time, 7, 14 and 21days after than the sesame. A greater part of the production components of both the sesame as well the cowpea bean was affected by the intercropping and significant...

SOCIOECONOMIC AND INSTITUTIONAL DETERMINERS OF DURABLE TECHNOLOGICAL INNOVATIONS IN THE FOOD-PRODUCING AGRICULTURE OF CAMEROON AgEcon
Temple, Ludovic; Kwa, Moise; Bikoi, Achile.
The challenges posed by food security for populations in sub-Saharan Africa and the fact that extensive production systems are reaching their limits in food-producing agriculture imply accelerating technological innovation toward ecological intensification of agricultural production systems. A review of research on plantain banana in Cameroon since 1988 revealed how institutional innovation enabled hybridization of different forms of research (fundamental, systems, and action research) and reinforced the organizational innovation required for technical change. Evaluation of impacts underlined the complementarity between an increase in productivity and in income in rural areas, the production of human and social capital and the protection of forest resources.

Stabilization of Upland Agriculture under El Nino-Induced Climatic Risk: Impact Assessment and Mitigation Measures in Indonesia AgEcon
Irawan, Bambang.
The El Nino events of 1982 and 1997 are the biggest ones in history. Both El Nino events resulted in decreased rainfall, particularly during the dry season of May-August. The 1997 El Nino caused a higher decrease in rainfall than the 1982 one. Consistently, in Java and Sulawesi the decrease in rainfall was higher compared to the national average in both 1997 and 1982. Since Java and South Sulawesi are major food producers (about 65 per cent of national food crop production), El Nino events could disturb national food security. In Kalimantan, the decrease in rainfall was relatively high during the 1997 El Nino, but quite low during 1982. On the contrary, Sumatera, Bali and Nusa Tenggara experienced a decrease in rainfall which was quite high in 1982 but...
